Home beauty devices are sold on flash count. Twenty thousand flashes, fifty thousand, a hundred thousand — the numbers climb every season while the physics underneath barely changes. The real limitation in a hand-held IPL or laser hair removal unit is not how many flashes the capacitor can deliver. It is how much of each flash actually lands on the skin.

That is the argument for the VCSEL 2835 laser LED at 660 nm / 940 nm — a vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser in a 2.8 × 3.5 mm SMD outline, with a 28° beam instead of the 120° wash of a standard LED.

Why 28 Degrees Changes The Whole Handpiece

A conventional 2835 LED spreads light across roughly 120°. Inside a handpiece with a 10 × 20 mm treatment window, most of that output bounces off the reflector or lands outside the window entirely. The VCSEL part puts the same optical power into a 28° cone, so the window receives a far higher share of every pulse — which shows up as either a shorter treatment time or a lower drive current for the same result.

Because a VCSEL emits from the surface rather than from a cleaved edge, it also behaves like an SMD component: reflow solderable, no facet to damage, no can package, and no alignment step in assembly. For a device maker moving from a laser diode module to a board-level part, that removes an entire mechanical sub-assembly.

Three Application Scenarios Where This Part Fits

• Home IPL and hair removal handpieces — 660 nm visible red for the treatment window and pilot beam, 940 nm for the invisible working beam that does the heating.
• Freckle and skin-tone handpieces — short, narrow pulses that concentrate energy on pigment instead of spreading it across the surrounding skin.
• Night-vision illumination, laser ranging and machine vision — 940 nm stays invisible to the eye for surveillance, drones and pose recognition, while the 28° cone throws useful light much further than a wide LED beam.

Three Rules Before You Design It In

1. Treat the beam, not the lumen figure, as the design target. With a 28° cone, a small shift in the distance between lens and window changes the power density a lot — fix the optics stack before you fix the drive current.
2. Ask for the divergence and power bin together. Two reels can meet the same wavelength spec and still deliver different power density at the skin; matched bins keep handpieces consistent from unit to unit.
3. Design the safety layer as part of the light path. A collimated source needs the diffuser, skin-contact interlock and window design working together, not a diffuser added at the end of the project.
